From February blahs to March ahhs – Spring is coming

February is my least favourite month to walk. Well, it’s tied with November for that “honour”. Why you ask? By February, I’m done with winter and while this year we’ve had an unseasonably warm winter in Toronto (and much of Ontario), I’m still more than ready for spring. Add onto that the fact the days, while getting longer thankfully, are still short and I really don’t get enough daylight, other than on weekends.

Then there’s the fact that I’m not a morning person and enjoy slowly waking up on weekends with a pot of tea and a book which means I have limited time for walks in winter as it gets dark so early. Add bad weather and overcast skies, and it makes it hard to motivate myself to get outside and into nature.

Which is why I love March. Okay, I love all the months from March through October and usually December and January for various reasons. But I have special affection for getting outside and walking in March. The days are getting longer which means I have daylight after work, not just on weekends, and can explore some of the trails or ravines after work. Spring flowers like snowdrops and crocuses start popping up to add colour and smiles; and tress start budding as the weather warms up. But, I’ll admit, it’s mainly the increased daylight. Even if it’s not sunny – although I would prefer sun – having daylight, in fact more than an hour of daylight after work means I can walk through the trails, not just on the sidewalk, on the way home. And nature, even Toronto’s nature in the city, is a balm to my soul.

So I love March and I love walking in March, watching the world wake up from her winter slumber.
