Exploring PEI: St. Peter’s – beaches, walks and a cozy B&B

Tuesday

After breakfast I walked back to the bus stop at Mount Stewart and hung out at the gas station for an hour until the bus came, I was early but didn’t want to explore for fear of missing the bus so the only thing I really saw of Mount Stewart was the gas station, Irving Oil. Then, with another $2, it was a quick jaunt up the road on the bus and I was in the village of Saint Peter’s Bay, where I would be staying for the next couple of days. It was an easy walk, about half a kilometer, to my B&B for the next two nights, Points East Coastal Inn. As I could see it from the bus stop, it was super easy to get to. The hosts, Rodger and Sarah, were super friendly and I was the only guest at the time, as I was at Bishop’s Rest.

As it was a lovely day, sunny and 18, after checking in, I wandered around exploring the village. It’s a small village and unfortunately, pretty much everything was closed, either because they close at the beginning of October like the cafe or they could not get staff for the fall like Rick’s Fish & Chips, which was on my list to eat at. I was super bummed that it was closed as I was really looking forward to eating there. They had a fabulous reputation online and I love fish & chips. Bah. Pretty much the only thing open was the general store which was more of a convenience store than anything else, so I stocked up on some snacks there. It was a lovely village, even with the damage from Fiona.

Thankfully Rodger offered to get me take out from a neighboring town as there were no options to eat in St. Peter’s (other than snacks from the general store). I declined for the first night because I had snacks, and I wasn’t overly hungry, but I took him up on the offer on Wednesday.

As evening came, I spent the early part of it chilling in the second floor sitting room, which overlooked the Bay (and had a lovely African violet) and caught up on my journaling about the trip before having another early night. It’s been great relaxing and catching up on my sleep so far. The bed was super comfortable, it had really pillowy mattress which made for a good night sleep, especially as I’m partial to softer beds. My hosts were also super nice and gave me a little bucket of milk for the morning plus left hot water in the coffee/tea service nook at the top of the stairs so that I could make myself a cup of tea if I got up earlier than breakfast. That little touch was awesome, and I would highly recommend staying there if you’re in Saint Peter’s.

Wednesday

I woke up to a cup of tea which was divine and my favourite way to start a day before heading down to breakfast. Breakfast at Points East Coastal Inn is a hot one which you choose from a menu. I got the waffles and fruit with PEI Maple syrup, which was delicious. It ended up being a bit more than I could eat so they thoughtfully packed up the pastry so I could eat it later (it ended up being a fab late afternoon snack with a cup of tea).

Afterwards, Rodger offered to drive me to a local beach that he and Sarah often walk. I, of course, took him up on because the Confederation Trail was closed for cleanup and beach walking sounded perfect, regardless of the weather. It was a bit of a dreary day, overcast with showers but about 15 degrees so not too cold. When he dropped me off at the beach, he told me I could walk back the way we came (which would be a short walk of about 6km) or continue on for a longer, more circular route. I, of course, took the longer route. Well, I thought as long as it didn’t start to pour rain, which it wasn’t supposed to, I’d walk the beach and then take the longer route so I could have a decent walk that day and explore more of PEI.

But first, I had my first PEI beach to explore! As there were a few people down the beach to the left, literally like four people, I decided to walk down the beach the right. looking alternately for sea glass in the sand and out at the water to see if I could see any seals or others sea animals. I didn’t see any that day, other than birds, but I did find a couple of small pieces of sea glass. But the best thing I found was this cool little heart-shaped, two-toned rock. It’s super cute and it was my first PEI souvenir.

After about an hour of beach walking, it started to get a bit darker so I thought I would head back to Saint Peter’s, the long way of course. The road I was following was quiet and followed the coast so I could see the gulf/ocean on my right much of the time. It was interesting looking at some of the houses along the way as there were a few nice ones including one with a turret but also a few that looked out of place, like the one that reminded me of a factory (it was very industrial looking).

Despite a few brief showers, it was a lovely, quiet walk about 16 kilometers in total as I took a couple of detours. As I got closer to St. Peter’s, I ran into some road work on the new repaved road to Greenwich Park (they adding a paved multi-use lane for walkers and bikers). Just as I was almost at the road work, I saw fox in someone’s yard but as I was taking a photo of it, the fox started to come closer so I started walking away and didn’t get the best photos. Animals approaching humans always makes me nervous, it was probably just friendly or used to handouts but I tend to err on the side of caution with wild animals.

That evening, Rodger got me take out fish & chips from Holy Cow. The fish was fine but the online reviews were correct, the fries weren’t so good. I probably should’ve gotten a burger but I was craving fish & chips. That evening the power went out for a bit because of a storm but it came back on about 2:00 am – I know this because I forgot to turn off the nightstand light…

Thursday morning

Breakfast on my last morning was a delicious omelette – I really loved the breakfast at Points East Coastal Inn, both were amazing – with fruit, pastry, juice, and tea. Then I settled my bill and thanked Rodger and Sarah for being excellent hosts. I haven’t stayed in many B&Bs as I tend to stay in hostels more but my experience with them convinced me give more B&Bs a chance. I would definitely recommend and stay at Points East Coastal Inn again. I then headed outside to wait for Liz from Siren’s Beach Motel as it was a beautiful sunny day, if a bit cooler at 13 degrees

Stay tuned for my next post about my four days in North Lake.
